O Orgulho de uma Cidade
Parece um texto decorado... e não há nos orgulhosos vimarenenses pudor em sabê-lo assim com certeza. E dizem: “O Café Milenário nasceu no ano em que a cidade de Guimarães comemorou 1000 anos de existência, em Novembro de 1953, daí o nome Milenário. Está situado no Largo do Toural, a sala de visitas da cidade vimaranense, junto à muralha onde se lê: "Aqui Nasceu Portugal". Continua a ser o café mais emblemático e histórico da cidade, um ponto de encontro de gerações de vimaranenses”.
Mas depois, há que acrescentar que deste café se fala muito nas visitas a Guimarães. Ponto de leitura de jornais, tertúlia das gerações mais antigas e início da Movida para os mais novos. É um dos ex-libris da própria cidade, tendo vista privilegiada para a remodelação do Largo do Toural aquando da da Capital Europeia da Cultura, em 2012. Em qualquer comentário de quem venha visitar Guimarães e, quase obrigatoriamente passe pelo Milenar, é inevitável não recomendar por esse mundo fora o prego no pão com queijo derretido. Mas também o vinho verde e a relação entre qualidade e preço são comentários favoráveis.
No edifício do café Milenário a arte contemporânea cruza-se com a tradição.... o Laboratório das Artes, prolongando muitas vezes as residências artísticas ao café com o mármore por textura e os bancos de madeira – como se fossem bancos de jardim individuais -, sempre com vidros bem largos para contemplar o centro da cidade.
As evocações dos Descobrimentos, figuras em escultura e até o preto e branco ilustrando as cenas da América da década de 1950, pensamos nós – até porque a simplicidade do café deixa aberta a imaginação – são pequenos acrescentos do dia-a-dia em Guimarães, num espaço que se renova a cada visita.
The Pride of a City
It seems like a memorised text... and the proud people of Guimarães are not backwards in showing their certainty of this. And they say: “The Café Milenário was born in the year in which the city of Guimarães celebrated 1000 years of existence, in November 1953, hence the name Milenário (Millennial).” It is located in the Largo do Toural, the visiting room of the city of Guimarães, next to the wall that proclaims: "Here Portugal was born”. It still is today the most emblematic historical café of the city, a meeting point for generations of people from Guimarães.
But then, it should be added that this café is much spoken of in visits to Guimarães. A place to read newspapers, to have soirées for older generations and where the Movida begins for younger generations. It is one of the symbols of the city itself, offering a special view on to the remodelling of the Largo do Toural when Guimarães was the European City of Culture in 2012. Any review of those coming to visit Guimarães almost has to include the Milenar and it will inevitably tell the world to go for the pork steak in bread with melted cheese, although the vinho verde and the price/quality factor also receive favourable comments.
In the café Milenário building, contemporary art intersects with tradition, the Laboratory of the Arts, often extending artistic residences to the cafe with the textured marble and the wooden benches - as if they were individual garden benches -, alongside the large windows looking out on to the centre of the city.
Elements recalling the Discoveries, sculptured figures and even the black-and-white illustrated scenes from America in the 1950s, we believe to be - because the simplicity of the café provides an open space for your imagination - small additions to daily life in Guimarães, in a space that renews itself upon each visit.
