Por baixo da arcada Nordeste da mais conhecida praça da capital, o Terreiro do Paço, a história do bicentenário Café Martinho da Arcada inicia-se em 1778 numa modesta loja de bebidas, onde também, se pode adquirir gelo. Isso mesmo.
Mas se tivermos de ser rigorosos, a data oficial da sua inauguração é a 7 de Janeiro de 1782. Como vem sendo hábito em alguns cafés desta Rota, a importância dos mesmos na vida dos romancistas e poetas é também patente aqui. Regressaremos ao poeta, no caso.
Antes, referir que devido aos muitos afazeres na Corte, o fundador do Martinho da Arcada arrenda-o, no ano seguinte, ao italiano Domenico Mignani, que o rebaptiza “Casa de Café Italiana”. O Martinho da Arcada, embora na posse da família Rodrigues, passa por sucessivas gerências que lhe alternam o nome. Reparem: “Café do Comércio”, “Café dos Jacobinos”, “Café da Neve”, “Café da Arcada do Terreiro do Paço”. Mais. Em 1829, Martinho Bartolomeu Rodrigues (neto de Julião) muda-lhe o nome para Café Martinho e, 16 anos depois, para evitar possíveis confusões com um outro estabelecimento que adquirira no Largo Camões, opta por Café Martinho da Arcada, designação que perdura até aos dias de hoje e que, desconfiamos, se manterá por muitos anos.
No Martinho da Arcada dizem, é certo, as línguas mais sensitivas, que se “come bem!”. Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato, Bacalhau à Lagareiro e o Bife à Martinho são apenas exemplos.
Quanto a Fernando Pessoa no Martinho da Arcada? O poeta utilizava-o como um escritório de fim de tarde, onde ao escrever encontrava amigos. Pessoa, numa quarta-feira de Outono (27 de Novembro) toma, com Almada Negreiros, o último café no Martinho da Arcada. Dois dias mais tarde é internado no Hospital de S. Luís dos Franceses, onde morre aos 47 anos, do dia 30 de Novembro de 1935.
O Martinho da Arcada é, como a famosa praça, um local de memórias.

On a Wednesday autumnal day (27 November), Pessoa drank his final coffee in the Martinho da Arcada, in the company of Almada Negreiros. Two days later he was admitted to the S. Luís dos Franceses Hospital, where he died on 30 November 1935, aged 47.
The Martinho da Arcada is, just like the famous square, a place of memories.
